Sidi Bousaid & coastal erosion risk

The risk of coastal erosion on areas like Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia is significant and part of a wider regional concern. The Maghreb region, including Tunisia, has experienced coastal erosion at an average rate of 15 centimeters per year from 1984-2016, more than double the global average. Specifically for Tunisia, the rate of erosion is even more alarming, averaging almost 70 cm a year, marking it as one of the highest in the region. This rapid erosion poses a real threat to the livelihoods of those who depend on coastal zones, including the vital tourism and fisheries industries. It is estimated that with current trends and without adequate adaptation measures, the erosion and rising sea levels will continue to escalate, further endangering coastal communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure. Efforts are being made to address this issue, such as the rehabilitation of 27 kilometers of Tunisia’s coastline with a combination of infrastructure and nature-based solutions to mitigate future erosion.
